MEET HIM AGAIN: On Friday, I included a short item about musician Dan O'Rourke and what sounded like a return to 60s-era protest songs. Since then, I've found out a bit more about Dan. His parents, John and Debbie, live in Green Valley, for starters. He was here for about three months recently and has given quite a few concerts here. Mom says he's heavily influenced by '60s and '70s folk/Americana music. I dug around online and found this song by him (with a hair cut). It's called Arizona Song, and it's beautiful. You can find out more about him on his website here.
HE GOT ME THINKING: Dan's ode to Arizona is striking, and I wondered if Arizona has a state song. Turns out, we have a state anthem and a state song. Read about them here. You gotta love the closing words to the anthem, written in 1915, three years after statehood: "We hail thee Arizona, Our Goddess and our queen."
I'm not making that up.
SEND IN YOUR NOMINEES: 2020 AZ-19 Most Influential People: It's our third year doing it and we're looking for nominees! Here's our special section from last year. And here's a column by Publisher Dru Sanchez about this year, deadlines, etc. It's a big event, and we're proud to put it on every year.
ADIOS! The long goodbye is over. We're officially and completely out of our old building as of 9 this morning and into the new. Find us at Green Valley Village, Suite 24, near the laundry mat. (We'll have to find a new place for our Christmas Day party — this new office won't cut it!)
One programming note: Our phones aren't up and running yet. If you have business with the paper you have two options the next couple of days:
•Email publisher Dru Sanchez at: dsanchez@gvnews.com
•Call: 949-500-3946
•Obits: obituaries@gvnews.com
HELPING OUT: The Pima County Sheriff's Auxiliary Volunteers is helping out with the Big Horn Fire in the Santa Catalina Mountains. Their communications people put out a video telling them thanks.
SHE GOES DOWN SWINGING: Former Green Valley Justice of the Peace and (now former) court administrator Lisa Royal is out of a job after today. I found out about this story about three weeks ago but processes and procedures prevented the telling. When I texted her Saturday morning (she wouldn't answer the phone), she wasn't completely forthcoming. Later, it became evident she wanted anybody to have the story but the Green Valley News. Just getting the story out is enough for us. Thanks to Dylan Smith at TucsonSentinel.com for making that happen. Ms. Royal takes a few swings in the story, all from her narrow point of view. We wish her the best.
