UNMASKED! I drove by the closed Commerce Bank at Esperanza and La Canada today to check out reports that the Shriners' Vidalia onions were sold out (it's true) when I saw this guy getting into his golf cart. From halfway across the parking lot I blurted out, "Stop, Trump!" And whaddya know — he did. If you've been driving around town lately and have seen a guy in a golf cart with a Trump mask, it's him. He has even made our newsletter a couple of times. He gave me a pretty good interview on the spot. He's not the wild-eyed Democrat you all suspect he is. In fact, he identified himself as a (whisper) conservative! Or kind of close to it.
KIRSTEN, KIRSTEN, KIRSTEN…: We won’t call her a wild-eyed Democrat either, but we do have to throw a bit of “huh?” toward U.S. House candidate Kirsten Engel. She lost to Rep. Juan Ciscomani in 2022, and announced recently that she’s running again in 2024 for District 6. Her campaign put out an email Monday with what it called “promising polling.” According to the poll, 68% disapproved of “Ciscomani’s plan to cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid,” 72% opposed his vote for a bill “that would cut veterans’ benefits 22%,” and you get the picture. (We won’t even address that these bills don’t exist as described.)
But I am interested in the poll itself. There was no info on it — the questions asked, number of people polled, how they were chosen and contacted, margin of error — you know, all those questions that ask, “Is this a legitimate poll?”
Engel’s staff didn’t respond to a request for info, and a request sent to a second email address found on her campaign website bounced back as non-existent. (Oh, bad sign, Kirsten.)
Hold the nasty phone calls, Dems. We plan to point out foibles on all sides during Election ’24 — in the candidates' emails, mailers, TV ads, editorials — wherever we find them. If you come across one, please send it our way. All we're asking is that candidates tell the truth.
JUST HANGIN' OUT: There’s Lola in the lower left, a dog our production crew Graham Harrington and Eric Tobias found wandering outside in the heat today, scared and aimless. And there are our reporters Jamie Verwys and Mary Glen Hatcher taking pictures of Lola when they should be working. When an animal comes around, everything screeches to a halt in this place. We’ve tracked down Lola’s family with the help of a local vet’s office and are trying to make contact. Meanwhile, Lola spent a spa day in the newsroom getting lots of attention, eating beef sticks, chugging water and distracting our reporters. She’s being housed at an employee’s place overnight.
BEAUTIFUL DAY: That’s what we call rain in Green Valley and Sahuarita. The top photo was taken by Irene Silverman. The other two were taken by Deby Cox, down by The Springs, near Torres Blancas Golf Course. Deby reported clouds but no moisture hitting the ground.
